[ES] In the new Millennium Italian universities have lived many changes deeply reshaping academic institutions. A relevant aspect was the more and more significant need to answer the demand of society and respond the social pressure to accountability through the transfer of knowledge, innovation and technology to economy. It led to an extension of the so-called university Fourth Mission, an instrument dedicated to create spin-offs to share scientific research results with society. The paper investigates the present reality of university spin-offs in Italy by considering their growing number also in the light of their role ofinstrument for academic job substitution. In particular, a tool to respond to the current condition of young Italian academic researchers increasingly affected by job offer reduction due to budget constraints, consequent university policies and new management issues.Boffo, S.; Cocorullo, A.; Gagliardi, F. A Distributed Caching System in DTNs

Many popular services in the Internet are based on a client-server architecture. This is not an optimal model in some cases. Especially, where the server becomes difficult to reach due to link or path failures or traffic overloadings. This Master's thesis presents a design, implementation and evaluation of a distributed caching system for optimization of content retrieval in Delay-Tolerant Networks (DTNs). The presented solution proposes pushing the content closer to the requesting clients, by caching it in alternative locations on the path between client and server. In this case, the clients are able to retrieve the content with lower latency and fewer network resource consumption. The approach is motivated by the decreasing price of storage in caches. The first part of the thesis introduces the research problem on a general basis, and a literature overview is given to present the current research in the field of Web caching, proactive caching in Content Distribution Networks and caching in DTN environments. A design of the distributed caching system is then presented. Focus is to design a node that can participate in content caching. Theoretical approach is taken to motivate network topologies, routing protocols and distributions of the queries for simulations. The experimental part of the thesis discusses the results of the simulations performed to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed solution. As a result, the presented distributed caching system is shown to increase the overall retrieval performance, as well as reduce the latency for obtaining the responses. In particular, caching policies that aggressively cache items always give the best results, however, with increasing storage costs. Moreover, the distribution of the queried items has a major impact on retrieval performance

    PG-Triggers: Triggers for Property Graphs

Graph databases are emerging as the leading data management technology for storing large knowledge graphs; significant efforts are ongoing to produce new standards (such as the Graph Query Language, GQL), as well as enrich them with properties, types, schemas, and keys. In this article, we propose PG-Triggers, a complete proposal for adding triggers to Property Graphs, along the direction marked by the SQL3 Standard. We define the syntax and semantics of PG-Triggers and then illustrate how they can be implemented on top of Neo4j, one of the most popular graph databases. In particular, we introduce a syntax-directed translation from PG-Triggers into Neo4j, which makes use of the so-called APOC triggers; APOC is a community-contributed library for augmenting the Cypher query language supported by Neo4j. We also illustrate the use of PG-Triggers through a life science application inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic. The main result of this article is proposing reactive aspects within graph databases as first-class citizens, so as to turn them into an ideal infrastructure for supporting reactive knowledge management.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 3 table

Eubiosis and dysbiosis: the two sides of the microbiota

    Get PDF
The microbial ecosystem of the gastrointestinal tract is characterized by a great number of microbial species living in balance by adopting mutualistic strategies. The eubiosis/dysbiosis condition of the gut microbiota strongly influences our healthy and disease status. This review briefly describes microbiota composition and functions, to then focus on eubiosis and dysbiosis status: the two sides of the microbiot

The spreading of the invasive sacred ibis in Italy

The spreading of invasive species in new continents can vary from slow and limited diffusion to fast colonisations over vast new areas. We studied the sacred ibis Threskiornis aethiopicus along a 31-year period, from 1989 to 2019, with particular attention to the first area of release in NW Italy. We collected data on species distribution through observations by citizen science projects, population density by transects with distance method, breeding censuses at colonies, and post breeding censuses at roosts. The birds counted at winter roosts in NW Italy increased from a few tens up to 10,880 individuals in 2019. Sacred ibises started breeding in 1989, with a single nest in north-western Italy. The number of breeders remained very low until 2006, when both overwintering and breeding sacred ibises started to increase exponentially and expand their range throughout northern Italy with isolated breeding cases in central Italy. In 2019, the number of nests had increased to 1249 nests in 31 colonies. In NW Italy, the density of foraging birds averaged 3.9 ind./km2 in winter and 1.5 ind./km2 in the breeding period, with a mean size of the foraging groups of 8.9 and 2.1 birds respectively. Direct field observations and species distribution models (SDM) showed that foraging habitats were mainly rice fields and wetlands. A SDM applied to the whole Italian peninsula plus Sardinia and Sicily showed that the variables best related to the SDM were land class (rice fields and wetlands), altitude, and the temperature seasonality. The areas favourable for species expansion encompass all the plains of Northern Italy, and several areas of Tuscany, Latium, Sardinia, and Apulia
